Yoga Poses For Beginners - Where Do I Start?

Per your request! Here is a little guide as to what poses to start with if you are brand new to yoga and ready to start something.

Cue Michael Jackson “Wanna Be Starting Something”

Take yourself on a ride through the Foundations Of Yoga Series and let me know how it goes! Start with the poses mentioned in the blog and return to them each day for a week to see how they shift and grow. Then tackle the Yoga For Complete Beginners Series coupled with either the Morning Yoga Practice or Bedtime Yoga Practice!

Also, clearly, I do not have a single yoga mat to speak highly of enough to recommend in my VLOG. Ultimately I am weary of people feeling like they have to have a big fancy mat to practice. (Yuck, consumerism!) BUT- if you have a mat that you really do love- please, share it with us below so myself and my new yoga friends can consider it and check it out. Don’t forget to tell us WHY you like it.

  1. What I've been doing is a four day routine where I pick a sequence then do a foundation video to top it off! I feel like I keep learning and learning...there is so much to focus on but I live the challenge and the way it makes my body feel good!

    1. Yes! There is so much to focus on and so much discovery to be made! We should never feel stuck or like we are waiting. Bah!
Find what feels good! Thanks Rebekah!!! xoxo

  2. hi adriene,
thank you so much for your beautiful yoga videos, I love them.
at the moment I'm practicing with a broken foot and I'm amazed how many of the postures are doable; but maybe it would be fun if you did a yoga-for-the-foot-injured sequence one day?
    with best wishes, avelottes

  3. Thank you for this wonderful video! I have been enjoying your videos so much. You are such a thoughtful teacher, you make it very easy for a beginner like me to enjoy learning yoga. I have passed your video information on to my colleagues as your videos are too good to keep a secret!

    Thank you again!

  4. Absolutely LOVE all of your videos! Incredible, beautiful, inspiring, amazing! I've been seeking transformation in my life, and I've finally found it. Thank you for sharing! You're awesome 😀

  5. Hi Adriene ! First of all, i would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I'm a beginner at yoga and your videos really help me.
But i'm having a lot of anxiety issues since a few months, i have panic attacks and i feel constantly afraid and stressed. (I didn't want to mention that here but i've just got dumped by my boyfriend and it really affects me.) What would you recommend me to do to try to feel better and less physically weak ? Are there some particular poses that might be beneficial for me and calm down my mind ?

Love from Belgium (and sorry for my bad english). ♡

    1. Hi Lisa!
Ah, my friend, I feel you! We all have been there and by golly the heart aches and the mind takes over and the body is caught in a fuzzy crossroads in between. I can offer you calming poses for the nervous system but my honest suggestion is that it does not matter what you do but that you do it. Take a 'yoga moment' each day for the next 2 weeks. This is a moment of conscious self love and a moment of reflection and awareness to move forward. It can been one pose or a sequence. It can be a breath or a full hour of deep breathing. Set a goal though to have your 'yoga moment' each day. Forward Folds are nice as they calm the nerves and offer a cooling wash over the body. Also- a seated or standing forward fold can be done almost anywhere and is a great pose for relaxation and introspection.
Sending you love and courage! Yoga is empowering! Give this a whirl and let me know how it goes! oxox

  6. Hello and thank you!
    For you wonderful videos and inspiration. I have one question;
I like to run, but the muscles shrinks (?) and makes my back skewed (?) (My English is not that good and Google translate gave me this two words?) afterwards.
Which video/positions do you recommend after running, that could make the back straight.
    Best regards from Sweden

    1. Hi my friend! In the foundations of yoga series look for 1) Runners Lunge 2) Forward Fold 3)Downward Dog 4)Wide Angled Forward Fold. Yoga for Runners is coming up soon, stay tuned!!! That video will include poses for warm up and cool down! oxox

  7. Yay! I have been loving my yoga journey.. Its been an amazing experience allowing my body to interact with my mind in a new way! Everytime i practice i feel my experience change and evolve a little bit.. Thank you! 🙂

  8. Hi Adriene,
I've been trying to do a little bit of yoga each day and I love your morning sequence and small space one too. Thanks for putting them out there!

You'd think it would be the easiest thing in the world to push back from my desk and go to the mat and do some yoga when I'm feeling stiff and achey. But some days it's hard to even do that! Would you consider putting together a yoga-in-chair sequence that people could do sitting at their desks? Something to relieve all the neck and shoulder tension that goes with sitting and typing all day?

  9. Hey! I adore your videos! I'm a new follower.
I'm not new to Yoga, BUT I am embarking on teaching Yoga (yay!) and I absolutely idolize your style. If you have any tips or advice for this new yoga instructor, I'd gladly take them!
    Thanks again!!

  10. Thank you so much for the beginner yoga info and videos. But I have a question for you. I have arthritis in the carpometacarpal joint (down below my thumb) and am having a hard time finding a comfortable position with my hands. Putting my palms down on the floor put pressure on that joint. I am just starting yoga and would love some ideas on how to work with this problem?? Thanks!

    1. I too have the same problem, arthritis in my hands make downward dog difficult or any prolonged positions on my hands. Will the discomfort improve or should it be avoided ? I am new to yoga and find your videos inspiring. Thank you !

  11. Hi!
I've just started my yoga journey. I've tried to begin yoga practice a few times but it only lasted at the most for 3 days... But now I'm on my second week and thanks to your videos I really feel that yoga is something I want in my life and will make a part of my everyday routine.
I already feel more foused and not as distracted by social media and internet (which was starting to become an actuall problem for me)
A few days ago I sat down and read about 100 pages of a book - something I haven't been able to do in forever because I simply haven't been able to take the time to sit down and relax. And I just loved it, I've always loved to read, but just haven't felt like i had the time.
So thank you for helping me starting a new chapter of my life and my finding the book-love back! xo

  12. Thank you so much for all of your videos. I am fairly new to yoga and really love your spirit and guidance! I was curious if there are any yoga books you would recommend to learn more about yoga? I would love a reference to use as I learn all of the new terms and postures. I would love to know more about yoga as a whole. Thanks is much again!!! I look forward to growing in my practice with your videos!

  13. Adriene -

I just discovered your blog and YouTube channel this weekend and I love what you have going. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and genuineness. I'm excited to begin my yoga journey!

  14. Hi, Adriene!

I am Stacey Kim, from South Korea!
I know, it's so random, yeah?

Well, a couple days ago I was checking some blogs and fell into one of your yoga video clips. I was amazed how nice and soft your instruction was!

Look at me now! I started watching and doing the yoga practice with you!

It's so wonderful to find the perfect yoga practice videos for the beginners, just like me!

Thank you so much for the videos!
I'll keep following and practicing those!

    Love,
    Stacey.

  15. Hi Adrian

Firstly, I want to echo all the previous comments, I love your videos. I am so glad my daughter nagged me into taking a look at your site. Initially it was to help with a recurring lower back problem but I now use your videos as part of my warm down after cycling. I love how chilled out and at peace I feel after a session.

Is there any possibility you could put a cycling specific session together, something that concentrates on the core, lower back and calfs?

    Love and Peace to you.

    Simon.

  16. Can I just add to all these comments by saying you are absolutely hilarious? I laugh outloud atleast once with every video.

Thank you so much for putting these out there for people to use (I'm a beginner myself) and also, thank you for being yourself.

    Namaste,

    Your Astrological Cancerian/Leo Cusp Homie.

  17. Hello Adriene! I have been enjoying your videos for a couple years now and want to thank you so much for making them free and easily accessible to all of us! My husband is just starting to join me in my yoga practice so I am looking for beginner videos for him (and myself) to do together. The links to the above series aren't working for me. Can you direct me to these collections? Thank you so much!

  18. Hi Adriene,
After much information gathering I came across your videos aimed at beginners and must say totally impressed, this has given me the confidence to press on with going to a local yoga class, thanks Adriene.

  19. For how long do you recommend doing beginners yoga practices? Than which practices u think we should continue with?

  20. Hello Adrienne

I started doing yoga on your channel about five months ago. I can’t express enough how positive it has been for me. It was a tough time, but through my yoga practice I found serenity and strength. I really appreciate your sense of humour and spontaneity in your videos and have great respect for the content you are contributing and good I am sure you are doing for so many others. Thank you so much for what you do. I had tried other yoga videos, cd’s but the teachers went so fast I gave up. The pace you put out is perfect and allows newcomers like me to learn. You are fabulous and thank you.

  21. 5 months ago I was searching yoga videos for beginners, watched a lot of them but your channel stood out the most. I am super glad to have found you. You made my yoga journey possible. Today, I am revisiting your foundations and beginners video to see how far I have improved and Yes I have! 2021 and all your old videos still rock! Thank you for sharing these free videos!
