- Hey guys, welcome to the Yoga With Adriene Vlog. I am Adriene and I am here to wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving. No doubt the theme of this vlog is gratitude and although I joke around a lot I really, really wanted to do a vlog today. One, because we're all at home on our computers cause we have the day off and we're stuffed full of food, but no, two, because one of the kind of sister practices to my physical yoga asana practice, is truely a gratitude practice. As much as we talk about our practice being infused with the breath, I feel like our practice is infused with gratitude, or at least it's a place to aim for. Gratitude is so important in our daily lives and we can cultivate gratitude in our daily lives through a practice. So a couple of things I just wanted to share with you about creating a gratitude ritual. And first of all if you're already like rolling your eyes and about to go onto like Reddit now and watch somebody slipping on the turkey gibbets or something stick with me because I just want to say that this kind of idea of cultivating gratitude is seriously something everyone can do and will benefit from. So it's not just for the om shanti yogis, or, you know, anyone of a particular religion, or background or whatever. I think that cultivating a gratitude practice is truly something we can all benefit from. And just my personal humble opinion I feel like even if we all were to spend just an ounce more time focusing on gratitude, the world would be a much happier, more beautiful place. So, you know, I don't mean to go as far to be like, "The secret of yoga is gratitude," but the secret of yoga is gratitude. And since we have a yoga channel, and a yoga lifestyle channel I would be remiss if we didn't have a vlog just giving a special shout-out to gratitude and a gratitude practice. So, some concrete ways, 'cause you guys are so good about asking, "Like what Adriene, like what?" So here we go: like for instance, write it down. Write it down; even if it's just three things for a day. Maybe give yourself a week. Seven days of a gratitude practice. Each night or each morning, each lunchtime, whenever's good for you. You can even use your, I don't have my phone here, but you can use your smartphone, the notes. You know, the notes section of your smartphone, you can do it here. Or if you're more of a pen and paper type guy or gal or on your computer. Write down three things each day for seven days, that your grateful for, that your gratitude for. That you're grateful for. Three things. I think you'll notice that right away you'll like have more than three things which is a beautiful thing. But just three things for seven days. Or you can like be a teachers pet and do this for a whole month. See how that goes. That's a great little ritual. If you want you can practice this, just connecting to three things at the end of your practice in Shavasana. It's a great little gratitude ritual. If you're a coffee person or you drink a morning coffee or morning tea, that's a great maybe moment to connect to three things while your coffee is brewing or while you're sipping your hot cocoa or your tea, connect to three things there. In traffic, in the car, before you jam your jam on the radio or on your iPhone, connect to three things that your, I almost did it again, that you're gratitude for (laughs) I'm grateful for the ability to articulate and speak clearly and thoughtfully. Last one I want to say and my mom taught me this, so it's a shout-out to my momma; hi mom, Melba. Hey Melba. Hey mom. Is whenever you're feeling down or blue, or you're feeling like poo-poo, kaka, shit, connect back to gratitude. My mom used to tell me this and I still do this to this day as an adult. Whenever you're feeling sad or you're feeling like, you know, that moment where you're like, "This is a bad day," "A bad hair day." "The world's, you know, against me." "Everything's going against my wishes, "my desires, and my soul." Start going through that gratitude list. And don't stop at three for heavens sake, start with, I'm thankful for the blue sky. I'm thankful for this Earth beneath me. I'm thankful for this body, this breath and then veer off from there and take it away. And man, thank you mom cause that has really proved to be an awesome tool and of course just infuses my gratitude practice. So yeah, practice gratitude when you can. Focus on the things you're grateful for. Gosh, we have so many things to be grateful for. I think you'll notice that not only will this infuse your yoga practice with more lusciousness, more juiciness, more yummy-ness but your daily life. Consider it kind of an energetic hygiene which we talk about in yoga a lot. Spiritual hygiene if you will. That's right, (snaps finger) I went there. A spiritual, energetic hygiene if you will. You're keeping your vibrational levels high by connecting to gratitude, improving the quality of your life. And of course, as I say in my public classes all the time, when we take the time to do the work, say thanks, we improve the quality of our lives but by focusing on that self-love we also of course increase our chances or our capability of improving the lives of others, those around us. Starting of course with our loved ones and then moving beyond that too. Serving others in any way we can. Alright, so self love, confidence, all that yummy goodness starts with gratitude, in my Yoga With Adriene opinion. So share this with your loved ones today on this Thanksgiving. If you're not celebrating Thanksgiving today, we can still celebrate gratitude, depending what culture you are watching from; what culture? What part of the world you're watching from. Let's spread gratitude today. So you can do this by sharing this video. By commenting below, maybe lets, actually let's start out now. Three things you're grateful for. Leave them in the comment box below. If you want to leave more then three you can but let's all leave three things. Share this with our loved ones. Make sure to say thank you and give thanks for everything both on and off the mat and let me know how it goes. Like anything else I think it's a practice. It definitely takes a focus and a choice, a conscious decision to say stop, drop, and be grateful. That was so cheesy. (laughs) Stop, drop, and be grateful. Alright, I am very grateful for all of you. If you're still listening to this, bless you, I am so grateful for you. All of us at the Yoga With Adriene channel, (laughs) there's two of us. We're both very grateful for all of you and Chris is behind the camera right now so I'm gonna break the fourth wall and say, Chris I'm very grateful for you and yeah, I look forward to the holiday season with you. We have lots of great stuff coming up. Won't even bother talking about it now, let's just keep it real on the gratitude train but stay tuned for lots more and Namaste. The great, great word of gratitude. The divine in me bows to the divine in you. Have a happy Thanksgiving everyone. Namaste. (upbeat music)
